This itinerary is created as a sample of a bespoke tour plan. Therefore, we do not offer fixed group departure dates for you to join. Instead, the tour is available for private travel, with flexibility to start on any date throughout the year. Indicative seasonal prices are provided below, based on two travellers. Should you wish to modify the itinerary, or if the number of travellers changes, please get in touch, and we will tailor a price to suit your requirements.

Accommodation Details

• Small Group Tours: Most of our small group tours feature high-quality hotels at the Egyptian 5-star standard in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, and Hurghada. These hotels typically include swimming pools and a selection of restaurants and bars.

• Lower Budget Trips: Some of our more economical tours, such as Egypt Express, utilise well-rated 3 and 4-star hotels with air-conditioned en-suite bathrooms. In addition, certain itineraries include a stay at a Nubian guesthouse in Aswan, known for its charm and prime location along the Nile.

• Private/Tailor-Made Tours: Custom itineraries may include a variety of accommodations, ranging from comfortable 3-4 star hotels—often the best available in less frequented destinations—to luxurious 5-star properties considered among the finest in Egypt.

• Hotel Changes: On group tours, accommodations may occasionally be swapped for alternative options of a similar quality. For guaranteed hotel choices, please consider a tailor-made tour. Full details of the usual accommodations can be found on the Accommodation tab of each tour page or in the downloadable Tour Notes.

Nile Cruise Accommodation

• Nile cruises are typically offered on Egyptian 5-star boats, equivalent to a good international 4-star hotel. For private and tailor-made tours, you can opt for deluxe 5-star boats, all-suite boats, or Dahabiyas. Full details are available in the Accommodation section of the tour page or by contacting us directly.

Room and Cabin Arrangements

• Accommodation is provided in twin, double, or triple en-suite rooms/cabins with air conditioning. Couples will receive a private double room/cabin. Please note that triple cabins are not available on Nile cruise boats.

• Solo travellers should review the Single Room Supplement option for information on sharing arrangements and additional costs.

Gala Dinners

• Many Egyptian hotels and Nile cruise boats host special gala dinners with entertainment on Christmas Eve (24 Dec) and New Year's Eve (31 Dec). While payment for the Christmas Eve dinner is often optional, the New Year's Eve dinner may be compulsory, regardless of attendance.

• Costs for these events typically range between US$50 and US$180 per person. Final pricing and attendance policies are confirmed closer to the date. Wherever possible, we select accommodations with optional gala dinners, but this cannot always be guaranteed. These costs are not included in tour prices and will be added to your booking if required. Further details are available upon request.

This tour includes a meet-and-greet service and airport transfer on the first day. Our representative will be waiting with an Egypt Uncovered signboard or your name clearly displayed for easy identification. If you are unable to locate our representative, emergency contact numbers will be provided on your tour confirmation voucher.

A transfer to the airport is also included at the end of the tour. Please review the tour itinerary and your flight times carefully. Most international flights departing from Khartoum are scheduled in the early hours of the morning. If you have upgraded to a 4 or 5-star hotel in Khartoum, only a day-use room is typically included for your final day. A full night's stay is provided at the standard 3-star hotel. If you require a full night’s accommodation in an upgraded hotel, an additional charge may apply.

Refunds are not available for missed transfers or parts of your trip due to incorrect flight details or delayed arrivals. Any additional expenses incurred to join the group will be your responsibility.

If your flights are scheduled to arrive before the tour starts or depart after the tour ends, we can arrange extra accommodation and airport transfers. We will strive to book these at the same hotel as the main tour, subject to availability (upgraded hotels can also be arranged upon request). Please note that if you do not book additional accommodation through us, arrival and departure transfer services will not be included, and you will need to organise your own transport.

Arrival Procedure

Be prepared for potential delays at immigration, especially if you are obtaining a “visa on arrival” (refer to the Passports and Visas section). After passport control, proceed to baggage reclaim, where further waiting times are common. Once you collect your luggage, you will need to show your baggage receipts (typically attached to your boarding pass), and your bags may be manually inspected by airport staff. This is standard procedure to ensure no prohibited items, such as alcohol or inappropriate materials, are brought into Sudan. Be aware that some magazines with certain images might also be considered inappropriate and could be confiscated without return.

After completing these formalities, you will find our representative waiting just outside the glass doors with an Egypt Uncovered signboard or your name clearly displayed.

Entrance Fees on Small Group Tours

• Entrance fees to tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary are not included in Small Group tour prices. However, these fees are usually included in Tailor-Made and Escorted tours. Refer to the Inclusions and Exclusions section below the tour itinerary for details about your specific tour and an estimated budget. These costs may vary and will be confirmed in Egypt at the start of your tour. A 50% discount is often, but not always, available for minors or ISIC cardholders.

• If you prefer, your guide can collect payment for all entrance fees at the beginning of the tour and manage these for you throughout. This payment is typically made in US Dollars cash, along with any Tipping Kitty contribution required for the tour. Alternatively, Egyptian Pounds or other currencies can be used, converted to USD. Local exchange rates are updated monthly based on bank rates, which may differ from online rates on the day.

Updates to Entrance Fees

Please be aware that while we strive to provide accurate information on local entrance fees, these amounts are subject to change due to fluctuating exchange rates and adjustments imposed by the Egyptian government. We understand that the Egyptian Government will revise entrance fees in November 2024, and our website will reflect these changes accordingly.

The tour price does not include entry fees for the sites visited during the tour.

Jordan:

It is highly recommended to purchase a Jordan Pass before travelling to Jordan. This package, developed by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, offers discounted entry fees for all the major sites included in this tour (and many more) and also provides downloadable digital brochures for each attraction. Additionally, it includes a free tourist visa for entering Jordan (normally JD40 when obtained on arrival). Having the Jordan Pass also helps us save time by avoiding ticket queues at the sites.

Some sites visited during our tours are not covered by the Jordan Pass, such as Mt. Nebo, St. George’s Church in Madaba, and the Shawmari & Azraq Reserves. For simplicity, the entry fees for these sites are included in your tour price. If you choose to visit other attractions not covered by the Jordan Pass during your free time or additional excursions, you will need to pay those entry fees directly at the sites.

The Jordan Wanderer Pass, which is suitable for all our tours that include a single-day visit to Petra, costs JD70 (approximately US$99). If your itinerary includes the Baptism Site at Bethany, you’ll need to add a JD8 supplement (discounted from the JD12 payable at the site). You can obtain the pass online by completing a simple form, ensuring your passport details are accurate as they also serve as your visa application. The pass will be emailed to you as a PDF, which you should print and carry with you. Present this printed pass at the immigration desk upon arrival in Jordan to secure your free entry visa, and at each attraction where it will be scanned for access.

If you do not obtain the Jordan Pass prior to arrival, you will need to pay the entry fees at each site individually and also pay JD40 for your visa on entry to Jordan (or pre-arrange your visa).

Egypt:

In Egypt, the tour price does not cover entrance fees to the sites listed in the itinerary. Please refer to the Exclusions section for a guide on how much to budget for this tour. Discounts of up to 50% may be available for minors or ISIC card holders, though this is not guaranteed and fees are subject to occasional changes.

For convenience, your guide will typically collect all entrance fees in cash at the beginning of the tour and manage payments at each site for you.

The tour price excludes permits and entrance fees for the National Museum and archaeological sites included in the itinerary. To cover these costs, as well as photo permits and local passport registration, a fee of EUR 260 per person will be collected in Khartoum at the start of the tour. Please bring 260 Euros (or an equivalent amount in US Dollars) in new, unmarked bills, preferably in smaller denominations ($10/$20). Additionally, you will need to provide 2 passport-sized photographs for permit processing.

Camera Fees & Permits

• A photography permit is required for all types of photography. We will arrange this for you, and the permit will specify where photography is allowed.
• Photographing military areas, personnel, bridges, broadcast stations, public utilities, slum areas, or beggars is strictly prohibited. Always ask for permission before taking photos.
• If you plan to bring a video camera, an additional fee of US$20 per archaeological site applies, and the permit must be arranged in advance. Please inform us several weeks prior to your arrival if you intend to bring a video camera.

We pride ourselves on being a small group operator, as this allows travellers to connect better with their companions and fully engage with their guide. Having a great guide is of little benefit if you’re stuck behind 30-40 others trying to catch a glimpse. That’s why we’ll never place you on a 50-seater coach with 49 other people and a single guide. Instead, our Egypt small-group tours are capped at 18 travellers.

Shoestring tours accommodate a maximum of 26 participants. For dedicated Nile Cruise tours, sightseeing excursions may involve larger boat groups, although you can book a private Egyptologist guide for an additional fee (advance booking required). Specialist escorted tours and workshops may have varying group sizes—please refer to the Tour Notes for specifics.

In Egypt, we work with fully trained, local English-speaking graduate Egyptologist guides who will accompany you during all sightseeing in Cairo and the Nile Valley. Additionally, we have permanent local representatives in all major towns, cities, and Red Sea resorts who manage the practical aspects of your tour. For desert excursions, we partner with local Bedouin guides.

While most of our tours are guided in English, we also offer a limited selection of small group departures led by experienced Egyptologist guides fluent in French or Spanish. These are marked clearly alongside the departure dates. Private tours with guides fluent in other languages, such as German, Italian, or Polish, can also be arranged—please get in touch for details and pricing.

On certain itineraries, one guide may accompany you in Cairo, with another taking over for the journey between Aswan and Luxor.

Vaccination requirements and other health precautions depend on both your destination and where you are travelling from. We advise speaking to your GP, a healthcare provider, or a travel clinic to get the latest details on the necessary vaccinations for your trip. You should also make sure that you are up to date with any vaccines and boosters recommended for your general health at home, including those for occupational risks, lifestyle factors, and pre-existing conditions.

In addition, the following vaccinations are typically advised for travel to countries in this region:

Malaria is not commonly present unless contracted abroad, so malaria prophylaxis is generally not necessary.

Important Note: We are aware that some places in Egypt use 'black henna' instead of pure brown henna. Black henna contains a chemical dye called PPD (paraphenylenediamine), which can cause severe allergic reactions and scarring. To be on the safe side, we recommend avoiding henna tattoos in Egypt unless you are certain they are made with pure brown henna.

We aim to offer as much flexibility as possible when booking your holiday with us. To accommodate varying travel needs, we usually do not include international flights in the main tour price. However, we are happy to recommend suitable flights for your trip. Simply let us know your preferred travel dates and departure airport, and we’ll provide a range of airlines, schedules, and fares for you to choose from.

Your airport transfers for arrival and departure are included on the first and last days of the tour. Most of our Egyptian tours begin and end at Cairo airport (CAI).

At times, we may offer flight-inclusive packages from selected airports. If these are available on our website, the prices are correct at the time of the quote but may change depending on fare availability. We will reconfirm prices when booking, and provide flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.

Travel Zoo / Groupon Flight Inclusive Packages
Occasionally, Egypt Uncovered offers flight-inclusive packages. In this case, international flights are included as part of the package you purchase. The flight-inclusive price is based on the most affordable Economy class ticket, which is typically non-refundable and non-changeable. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets, can be requested for an additional cost. Any changes to flight-inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline's ticket policies.

Flight CO2 Emissions
Flying is a wonderful way to see the world, but it also contributes to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that affect the environment. By considering the CO2 emissions of your chosen flight, you can help reduce your travel impact.

When booking your international flights, we encourage you to take CO2 emissions into account. Some airlines and flight comparison websites (such as Google Flights, Skyscanner) display this information, allowing you to compare options and make a more sustainable choice. Fortunately, many airlines are working on sustainability efforts, and by choosing a greener option, you can support positive environmental change while enjoying your travels.

The official languages of Sudan are Arabic and English, as stated in the 2005 constitution. However, English is rarely spoken outside of official circles or the hospitality industry. Interestingly, it is often the older generations who have a stronger command of the English language.

Sudan is an Islamic state, and the government has implemented Sharia law. Alcohol, drugs, and homosexuality are strictly prohibited. Foreigners are generally treated as locals, which means they could face severe consequences for violating these laws, including lengthy jail sentences and corporal punishment, with a minimum of forty lashes. It is crucial never to display images, statues, or figures of the Prophet Muhammad.

Sudanese women typically wear modest attire and cover their heads. As a sign of respect, foreign women should consider doing the same, even if they see other tourists not following this custom. Men are expected to wear long trousers rather than shorts. When in doubt, it is best to dress conservatively.

Although Sudanese people do not expect foreigners to observe Ramadan, the Islamic fasting month, it is considered impolite to eat, drink, or smoke in public during this time.

The Sudanese Pound (SDG) is divided into 100 piasters. Banknotes are available in denominations of SDG50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1. Coins come in denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 piasters. The Sudanese Pound replaced the Sudanese Dinar, which was phased out on 30 June 2007. The exchange rate is as follows: 1 Sudanese Pound = 100 Sudanese Dinars = 1,000 old Sudanese Pounds.

Please be aware that credit and debit cards are not currently accepted in Sudan.

• The best place to exchange currency is at the airport, as the rates are generally more favourable than those at hotels.
• Currency exchange should only be done at authorised bureaux de change or banks, and receipts should be kept.
• Severe penalties are imposed for exchanging money on the black market.
• Only new US Dollar bills are accepted in Sudan. Old or worn bills will not be accepted.

The official currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound, symbolised as 'LE'. Its value can fluctuate notably when compared to the British Pound but generally remains close to the value of the US Dollar. There is no need to bring Egyptian Pounds with you, as you can easily exchange currency at hotels, airports, and banks. It is advisable to carry some small denomination notes or coins during your trip, as they are handy for paying for toilets, tips, and minor purchases. ATMs are widely available in major cities, and many local shops accept VISA, Mastercard, or Amex. However, they may charge a fee of up to 10%, so it’s best to confirm this before making a payment. Traveller’s cheques are not widely accepted anymore, and those that are may come with high exchange fees.

While in Egypt, you’ll need to budget for meals not covered in your itinerary, drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and personal expenses like laundry. These are typically paid for in Egyptian Pounds. Additionally, you’ll need funds for the Tour Tipping Kitty and site entrance fees. These can be paid to your tour guide at the beginning of the tour in hard currency (USD, GBP, EUR). For more details and suggested amounts, please refer to your tour’s Included/Excluded information.

It’s difficult to recommend a precise amount for personal spending as this varies widely between individuals, but as a general guide, we suggest budgeting at least USD 15-25 per day per person. If you intend to do a lot of shopping or buy numerous alcoholic drinks, it’s best to budget more.

Passport Requirements

• Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from the country.
• Avoid using a passport that is nearly full or close to expiry.
• Visa arrangements are the traveller’s responsibility, and these can change according to local regulations.

We advise contacting the nearest Egyptian consulate or embassy for up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Visa Information

• It is generally recommended that all travellers secure their Egypt visa before arrival, as we cannot guarantee that visas will be available at the airport. An e-visa can be applied for through visa2egypt. Please avoid other websites, as many are fraudulent.
• In practice, many travellers from countries like the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA can obtain visas upon arrival at Cairo airport. The process is quick and straightforward. The visa costs US$25 per person, payable in hard currency (GBP, USD, or EUR). If necessary, change will be given in local currency.
• No forms need to be completed, nor are passport photos required. Visas are issued at one of the bank desks in the immigration hall, before passport control. A representative will assist you through this process.

Important Update for Canadian Nationals:

• As of October 1st, 2023, Canadian passport holders can no longer obtain a visa on arrival or an e-visa. Canadians must now secure a visa in advance from the nearest Egyptian consulate.

Visas for African and Indian Nationals:

• Nationals from most African countries and India, along with some other nations, must apply for their visa before travelling.

The time zones for Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon are GMT +2, while the UAE operates on GMT +3. Daylight saving time has been implemented intermittently in the past. Currently, Egypt is expected to maintain a consistent time zone of GMT +2 from 2016 onwards, with no changes planned for daylight saving, though this could alter with little notice, affecting flight schedules and times. In Jordan and Israel, a one-hour daylight saving shift is typically observed from the end of March to the end of October, changing the time to GMT +3. The exact dates of this shift vary each year, and in some cases, the adjustments may not take place at all.

Tipping is a significant aspect of Egyptian culture and tradition. To make it easier for you to plan your expenses and reduce any inconvenience while in Egypt, we have introduced a 'Tipping Kitty' on our small group tours. This will be collected as a local payment and will range between US$30-80, depending on the length of your trip. The payment can be made in US Dollars (cash), Egyptian Pounds, or other currencies converted to US Dollars at the current exchange rate, or by credit card (with a 3% fee). The tipping kitty covers a variety of individuals you'll interact with during the tour, including hotel porters, housekeeping staff, train and station staff, drivers, site guards, and local representatives. For more details on how much to budget for this, please refer to the Included/Excluded section below the tour itinerary.

Your Egyptologist guide (and Bedouin guides in the desert) are not included in the kitty, and you may choose to tip them separately at the end of your tour, based on the level of service and satisfaction. There is no obligation to tip a specific amount, and you should consider your own budget. If you are unsure, we recommend tipping around USD 10-15 per person per day.

Children under 12 years old are exempt from paying the tipping kitty.

For private or tailor-made tours, we can arrange a tipping kitty upon request, or you can choose to tip individuals as you go. Your guide will be happy to offer advice either way.

Our Egypt tours offer a 24-hour airport meet & assist service at Cairo airport, covering both your arrival and departure transfers between the airport and hotel, as well as all other necessary transfers. Upon your arrival at Cairo airport, one of our representatives will greet you in the immigration hall before you reach passport control. They will assist you with visa procedures, help you collect your luggage, and then take you to your hotel.

Airport transfers are included only on the first and last day of the scheduled tour, as well as on any extra days if you book your hotel accommodation through us. If you choose to organise your own accommodation for extra nights before or after the tour, you will be responsible for arranging your own transfers on those days.

Our tours offer a combination of various modes of transport. We want you to truly experience the country you're exploring, but at the same time, ensure you’re comfortable and refreshed for the next part of the journey. Given the routes in Sudan, the available public transport options, and the distances between locations, we use private vehicles like Toyota Landcruisers (max 4 passengers per vehicle) or Toyota Hilux (max 3 passengers per vehicle) for the entire tour.

Passport Requirements:

• Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your date of departure, with at least two blank pages, and no Israeli stamps.
• Avoid using a nearly full or soon-to-expire passport.
• It is your responsibility to arrange for a visa, and the requirements may change at the discretion of the local authorities.

Obtaining a Sudan Visa:

Securing a Sudan visa can be a complex process. There are two main ways to obtain your visa:

1. Apply for Your Visa in Advance:

   • This option offers more certainty and peace of mind, but it can be more costly and time-consuming as it requires you to either visit the Sudanese embassy in person or mail your documents.
   • Most nationalities, including the UK, now need an invitation letter from our partners in Sudan, along with a letter from the Sudanese Ministry of the Interior to support your application.
   • The process typically takes a minimum of 4 weeks, so plan accordingly. You may be required to attend a brief interview at the embassy/consulate to verify that you are a genuine tourist.
   • While visas are sometimes issued on the same day, you may need to return a few days later to collect your passport. Many embassies/consulates also offer postal services.
   • You may choose to use a visa agency, but you will still need to provide all necessary documents and cover both the agency's fees and the costs for the required paperwork.
   • An additional visa fee is payable at the airport immigration desk upon arrival: US$100 for most nationalities and US$150 for US citizens.

2. Obtain Your Visa on Arrival at Khartoum Airport:

   • This option is more affordable and less complicated, and it generally works well.
   • We will provide you with the invitation letter and other required documents from the Sudanese government.
   • Once everything is arranged, we will send you an entry permit, which you must print and bring with you to board your flight to Khartoum.
   • Upon arrival, exchange the entry permit for a visa sticker at the airport. First, show your passport and entry permit to an official, then proceed to the Visa Counter to pay the visa fee and receive your sticker.
   • The visa fee at the airport is US$100, or US$150 for US citizens, payable in cash (use one $100 bill and one $50 bill issued no earlier than 2009).

For both options, you will need to make an additional payment in US Dollars in cash to our local partners in Sudan after your arrival to cover the costs of processing your visa. Please refer to the "Options" section or contact your travel consultant for more details.

Important: Please send us a scanned or photographed copy of the identity page of your passport as soon as possible after booking so we can secure the necessary documents for your visa.

Sockets have two round prongs and are 220 volts (Type C). Universal adapters can be found in most airport shops if you don’t have one with you. Standard European adapters should work fine, although they may feel slightly loose in the sockets at times. All hotel rooms are equipped with electrical sockets for recharging devices like cameras and phones. Hairdryers are usually available upon request at the hotel reception if not provided in your room.

For US appliances (110 volts), you will need both a voltage converter and a plug adapter.

The sockets in this area are two-pronged and provide 220 volts. Universal adaptors can be found in most airport shops if you haven't already got one. Standard European adapters will also work, though they may fit a bit loosely in the sockets. Every hotel room comes equipped with electrical sockets for charging devices like cameras and phones. Hair dryers are typically available upon request at the hotel reception if not already provided in your room. If you're travelling with US appliances, you'll need both a voltage converter and a plug adapter.

Luggage: You can bring suitcases, rucksacks, or fabric holdalls to Egypt and Jordan. It’s also a good idea to bring a small daypack or bag for use during the day. Your main luggage will usually stay at the hotel while you go on sightseeing trips, so you won’t need to carry it much. Hotel porters are typically available to assist with your bags.

Luggage Limits: There are no specific luggage restrictions for this tour. However, most airlines allow between 20kg and 25kg for checked luggage and between 5kg and 10kg for hand luggage. Be sure to check your airline’s requirements before heading to the airport.

Clothing: In Egypt, the weather will mostly be hot, while in Jordan, temperatures vary greatly. Expect hot days in summer and cooler, occasionally wet days in winter. However, at night and especially in the desert, temperatures can drop significantly, so make sure to pack for colder conditions as well. You won’t need formal attire like suits or ties for the cruise boats or restaurants in 4 or 5-star hotels. Long sleeves are recommended on feluccas to protect from mosquitoes. Modesty is important in both Egypt and Jordan, particularly for women, so please ensure your clothes are loose and not revealing. Shorts (not hot-pants) and T-shirts are acceptable at tourist sites, but they shouldn’t expose too much skin (we recommend covering your shoulders). In Cairo and Amman, and when visiting mosques, it’s respectful to cover both your legs and arms.

Other Items: We suggest packing a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a basic first aid kit, toiletries, a small towel, a money belt, a small torch, a camera, and a charger. If you plan to travel on a felucca sailboat in Egypt, a light sleeping sheet or sleeping bag liner will make you more comfortable, and a light sleeping bag is recommended during winter (November to February). If your tour includes an overnight Bedouin camp in Jordan, bedding is provided, but we suggest bringing a sleeping sheet or liner for added comfort all year round (sand has a way of getting everywhere). In winter or if you prefer sleeping under the stars, bring a sleeping bag, as it can get very cold at night.

Footwear: If your tour includes a felucca sailboat or walking on the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib, bring shoes you’re happy to get wet. As there’s quite a bit of walking involved in many tours, whether sightseeing or hiking, comfortable walking shoes are a must. Smart dress shoes are unnecessary unless you plan to visit upscale restaurants and want to dress up accordingly.
