Our journey commences with an early morning drive from Cairo towards the Mediterranean coast, pausing at the WWII cemeteries of El Alamein. After a delightful lunch in Marsa Matrouh, we proceed through the desert, eventually reaching Siwa Oasis. Nestled within a breathtaking landscape and near the Libyan border, Siwa is one of Egypt’s most remote communities.

Our journey through Siwa Oasis begins with a delightful bicycle ride through date palm plantations, heading towards the Temple of the Oracle, which was constructed to commemorate Alexander the Great’s initial arrival in Egypt. After a rejuvenating swim in the pools of Cleopatra Spring, the remainder of the day is yours to freely wander through the vibrant markets and souks of Siwa.

A complete day starts with a trip to the nearby Mountain of the Dead, where you can observe the numerous captivating tombs that are scattered across the area, before venturing into the Old Shali City at the heart of Siwa. Constructed primarily from mud and stone, this location once served as the town’s original stronghold. In the afternoon, we board our 4WD vehicles and journey through the sand dunes into the vast Great Sand Sea, making a stop to explore an ancient seabed filled with marine fossils, before concluding the day at the hot springs in Bir Wahed. After a refreshing swim, we savour dinner while watching the sun dip below the desert horizon.

Leaving Siwa Oasis this morning, we travel along the coast towards Marsa Matrouh. The town, which has a significant Libyan/Berber community, possesses a distinctive atmosphere. Here, we have the opportunity to take a dip in the Mediterranean before exploring the vibrant markets, including the Libyan souk. Later this afternoon, we resume our journey to Alexandria.

The morning is at leisure to unwind and explore Alexandria, before we embark on an afternoon tour of the stunning Montazah Palace. Later this evening, we take the tram into town, explore a few local shops, and stroll along the corniche before savouring Alexandrian Fateer for dinner.

Payment for these dinners is typically optional on Christmas Eve (24 Dec), but mandatory on New Year's Eve (31 Dec), regardless of whether you attend.
