Country(ies): Jordan

Tour type: Small Group

Group size: Min: 2 | Max: 14

Accommodation:3 to 4-star hotels, Red Sea resort & Bedouin camp

Meals: Breakfasts - 8, Lunches - 2, Dinners - 2

Transport: AC minivan/minibus & Bedouin jeep

Highlights:As-Salt, Amman Food Tasting, Dana Hike, Red Sea in Aqaba, Wadi Rum Bedouin Experience, Petra Reverse Hike, Dead Sea and Wadi Mujib Hike, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Jerash

This is our signature small-group tour of Jordan, combining classic sites like Jerash and Petra with more active adventures. You'll enjoy a Petra hike and a Wadi Mujib canyoning experience, a Wadi Rum jeep safari with a Bedouin camp stay, a swim in the Dead Sea, a visit to the Red Sea, and much more.

Our journey begins with a trip north from Amman to the city of As-Salt, where a walking tour along the Harmony Trail highlights the friendship between the local Muslim and Christian communities. We'll then return to the capital, Amman, to explore the downtown area, including the Citadel and Roman Theatre. The day also includes a local food tasting experience, giving you a chance to sample some traditional cuisine.

As we travel south, we'll stop at the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve. A short hike will take us around the restored Dana Village. You'll then have some free time in Aqaba to relax by the Red Sea, explore the reefs, or perhaps take a morning boat trip.

Leaving the coast, we'll turn our attention to the desert and the stunning scenery of Wadi Rum. We'll spend the night in a comfortable Bedouin camp nestled against the towering cliffs. The next morning, a jeep safari will take us through the sand dunes and past incredible rock bridges. We'll also spend time with a local Bedouin shepherd to learn about their nomadic way of life and how they care for their animals in the desert.

Our next stop is the jewel in Jordan's crown: the 'lost' Nabataean City of Petra. We'll enter via a unique and less-travelled 'back-route' hike. Before we begin, we'll explore the small but fascinating site of Little Petra (Siq al-Barid). From here, a short jeep ride takes us to the start of the trail that links Little Petra to the Monastery and the main site of Petra. This route is an interesting and much less crowded way to visit, rewarding you with incredible mountain views towards the Holy Land. While hiking the back-route, you'll still have the opportunity to see all the same monuments as the normal route, along with the added bonus of Little Petra and the Monastery.

This morning brings another change of scenery as we drive along the scenic Dead Sea road, with great views of the salt flats at the southern end. Our first stop is Wadi Mujib, where you'll have a day of adventure hiking through water and climbing small waterfalls along the famous Siq Trail. After a day of activities, we'll make our way to our resort on the banks of the Dead Sea. You'll have free time to swim – or rather float – in its incredibly salty waters and to relax by the hotel pool. Be sure to bring a newspaper or magazine for that iconic Dead Sea photo!

On our final day of sightseeing, we'll visit the Roman mosaics in Madaba, followed by incredible views towards Jericho and Israel from Mount Nebo. We'll finish with the amazing Roman site of Jerash, one of the best-preserved in the entire Middle East.

Extra day in Amman - pre tour

Our day begins with a visit to the hilltop town of As-Salt, located about 40 minutes from Amman. Once an important trading link and the capital of Amman, As-Salt’s old Islamic architecture was built using fine yellow limestone, and many impressive buildings still stand today amidst its narrow streets filled with shops. The town now serves as an example of religious and cultural friendship between its local Muslim and Christian populations, and we’ll take a walking tour on its self-designed ‘Harmony Trail’ to learn more about the town and local Jordanian life.

In the afternoon, we'll continue with a city tour of Amman, a city with a rich history dating back millennia. Archaeological discoveries have revealed remains from the Neolithic period through to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Arab Islamic ages. We'll begin at the Citadel, the former home of the ancient Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, and a Byzantine Church. From there, we'll make our way to the 6,000-seat Roman Theatre, a monument from the Roman period that is still in use today for various cultural events.

While in Downtown Amman, we'll also include a special food tasting tour. You'll have the chance to try several different dishes, which may vary. We'll start with a snack like Manakish (flatbread with various toppings like egg, white cheese, or za'atar) or a classic falafel sandwich. You might also get to taste the Jordanian national dish of Mansaf, a delicious slow-cooked lamb with rice and a yoghurt sauce. To finish, we'll visit a popular local sweet shop to try one of the city's famous desserts like Knafeh.

Today, we'll travel down the Desert Highway to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where we'll stop for a relatively easy hike through the beautiful hills and scenery. As Jordan's largest nature reserve, it offers great views of the valleys and hills from the trails around the restored Dana village. Spring is a particularly lovely time to visit when the terrain is surprisingly green and full of flowers. After an included picnic lunch and our walk, we'll continue on to the Red Sea city of Aqaba, where you'll have a free evening (and the following morning too).

You have a free morning to relax by the Red Sea, explore Aqaba, or enjoy the many water sports on offer. The crystal-clear waters and vibrant reefs make Aqaba one of the best spots in the Red Sea for diving. You can also take an optional morning boat trip to snorkel on the nearby reefs.

This afternoon, after meeting up with new arrivals from Egypt, we'll leave Aqaba and drive into the spectacular desert scenery of Wadi Rum. We'll be greeted by friendly Bedouin hosts at a comfortable camp nestled beneath the towering rocks and cliffs. The evening is yours to relax at the camp before enjoying a delicious, traditional Jordanian meal, which typically includes 'Zarb', a local speciality of lamb and chicken cooked underground in the authentic Bedouin style. Optional activities for the evening include a sunset camel ride or stargazing with telescopes.

OVERNIGHT:

Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp

MEALS:

Breakfast, Dinner

EXTRAS:

After breakfast at the camp, we'll take a jeep safari through the sands and beneath the towering 'jebels' of Wadi Rum. We'll stop to climb sand dunes and see incredible rock formations, including a spectacular rock bridge.

We'll also enjoy some traditional Bedouin activities, starting with a walk alongside a local shepherd with his sheep and goats to a Bedouin tent.

You'll have the opportunity to participate and learn about other traditional Bedouin activities like shearing sheep, milking, grinding grains, making bread, and roasting coffee until our lunch is ready. After truly experiencing the nomadic Bedouin way of life, we'll return to our camp by jeep and then drive to Petra.

For a spectacular and atmospheric introduction to Petra, you have the option of taking the Petra by Night tour this evening. You'll walk through the Siq to the Treasury, with the entire path beautifully lit by hundreds of candles.

Today, we dedicate our time to exploring the magnificent Nabataean city of Petra. Once the ancient capital of a vast commercial empire, it was eventually taken over by the Romans in 106AD and subsequently forgotten for centuries, known only to local Bedouin communities. It was finally rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Located on the edge of the Wadi Aruba desert, Petra is almost impossible to reach, save for a narrow rock cleft known as the Siq. The Nabataeans carved most of their dwellings directly into the multi-coloured sandstone cliffs, leaving very few free-standing buildings. While the tourism infrastructure in the nearby village of Wadi Musa has boomed, once you enter the site, it remains a protected haven, with the bustle of modern life feeling miles away.

We'll have most of the day to explore this ancient city, with the added bonus of exploring Petra via the unique back-route hike. We'll begin by visiting the small but fascinating site of Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) before taking a short jeep ride to the start of the mountain trail. This path connects Little Petra to the Monastery and the main site of Petra, offering a less crowded way to visit. The hike rewards you with incredible mountain views towards the Holy Land, and you'll still see all the monuments from the normal route, with the addition of Little Petra and the Monastery. The trail begins with an ascent of rock-hewn steps and paths along the mountain's edge. Once you reach a plateau, you can stop for refreshments at a small café with fantastic photo opportunities. The path then continues until you get your first glimpse of 'Ad-Deir' (the Monastery), where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest before descending into the main site of Petra.

Once you're in Petra, the valley opens up to reveal tombs carved into the rock on both sides. You'll get a glimpse of the ruined Roman amphitheatre and colonnaded streets as we continue through the ancient city. Our path will eventually lead us to the Khazneh (Treasury), arguably Petra's most familiar and iconic monument.

While the back-route hike isn't particularly difficult, it does involve a number of ascents, descents, and a significant number of steps. This route is only suitable for those who are comfortable with hiking on this type of terrain for at least 2-3 hours to reach the Monastery, followed by a few more hours of walking on sandy ground while exploring the main site. For those with mobility concerns or who prefer not to walk the full distance, horse carriages are available for an agreed period of time within the main site of Petra for approximately 20 JD (USD 28). Please note that the use of these horse carriages is not recommended due to animal welfare concerns.

After breakfast in Petra, we'll travel north along the scenic Dead Sea road to Wadi Mujib to hike the exciting Siq Trail. Along the way, we'll be rewarded with great views of the salt flats at the southern end of the Dead Sea. Upon reaching the Wadi Mujib visitor centre, you'll have time for lunch (not included) before we enter the water and begin our hike.

Descending into the gorge, we enter the Wadi Mujib Nature Reserve. From April to October, you can take an exhilarating hike through the shallow waters that fill the gorge. The trail involves climbing small waterfalls with the help of installed steps, leading you to a large waterfall at the end of the gorge where you can relax. The entire round trip typically takes 2 to 3 hours. We highly recommend bringing a dry-bag to protect your camera or phone, and water shoes, which you can hire or purchase at the visitor centre for a small fee.

Note: During the months of November to March, when the Siq Trail is closed, we will instead visit the Baptism Site in Bethany. This recently excavated site is believed to be the biblical 'Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan' where John baptised Jesus Christ. We'll travel by electric minibus to the three main sites – Tell Mar Elias, the Baptism Pools, and John the Baptist's Church – and explore the churches, caves, and pools dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods. The site has also been visited by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

After our day of activities, we'll head to our resort right on the banks of the Dead Sea. You'll have free time to swim – or rather float – in its incredibly salty waters and to relax by the hotel pool. Don't forget to bring a newspaper or magazine for that iconic Dead Sea photo!

After a restful night, we'll head to nearby Madaba to marvel at the Byzantine mosaics and the 'Madaba Map', the oldest preserved map of the Holy Land. From there, we'll make our way to Mount Nebo, the place where the prophet Moses is said to have looked across the Promised Land. On a clear day, which is most of the time, you'll get great views towards Jericho and beyond.

Our final visit of the day is to the ancient city of Jerash, known as one of the largest and best-preserved Greco-Roman cities outside of Europe. Once we arrive, we'll explore the Forum, wander its Roman colonnaded streets, and see the Nymphaeum and the Temple of Artemis, which was built on one of the city's highest points.

The day ends with a drive back to Amman, where we will spend our final night in Jordan.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level. In general, specific hotels cannot be guaranteed on our group tours, but you may select your preferred options if you are booking a tailor-made trip.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the destination you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

TOUR NOTES

The detailed Tour Notes below have been written to give you some more detailed information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday. We recommend downloading an up to date copy of these shortly before you travel in case of any changes.

The hotels used on this tour are rated at the Jordanian 3 and 4-star level. Local star ratings may vary from international standards but we ensure we use some of the best hotels available at the level stated. We have also aimed to use hotels in Amman that have a better location than most, with a range of cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. Accommodation is based on twin or double en-suite rooms with air conditioning. All couples will have a private double room.

In Wadi Rum we use a Bedouin camp located inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area. Accommodation is in permanent traditional goat hair tents with proper beds and all bedding provided. Bathrooms are separate, though some en-suite tents are also available and subject to availability you can upgrade to these locally if you wish. You can also bring a sleeping bag if you wish, and find a sheltered spot on the rocks on the edge of the camp and sleep under the stars.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.

We are committed to being a small group operator, as we feel this gives everyone in the group the best chance to get to know their fellow travellers and to hear and make the most of their guide. So, on our small group tours we won't ever put you in a full size coach packed with other people and just one guide.

This tour has a minimum group size of 2, and maximum of 14.

To accompany you on the tour we provide an English speaking local tour leader/driver and specialist guides in Jerash, Amman and Petra. Groups of 6 or more will have both a driver and a professional guide throughout the trip.

At Encounters Travel we only use local Jordanian guides and reps. We feel this gives you the best experience of the country and the sites you are seeing.

This tour includes several walks or hikes in Jordan and while you do not need to be super fit by any means, you should bring suitable footwear.

In Wadi Mujib we'll hike along the Siq Trail which is a water trail through the canyons of Wadi Mujib. The majority of this hike is relatively easy, however there are a number of small waterfalls which must be ascended in order to reach the end of the route. At these waterfalls, ladders and ropes are provided for assistance. We highly recommend bringing along a dry-bag (so your camera or mobile phone don't get wet) and water shoes. It is possible to hire a dry bag at the visitors centre for around US$7.00 and purchase water shoes for US$7.00).

In Dana Biosphere Reserve we'll take a short walk (around 2 hours) through the hills around the restored Dana village. Trails are generally always dry and a little rocky but we won't be taking one of the longer more challenging hikes here.

In Petra, you will be doing a lot of walking to explore the site. This tour includes the back route hike from Little Petra, to the Monastery and then through the main site of Petra. Whilst the back-route hike into Petra isn't particularly difficult, as a number of ascents/descents and a significant number of steps are required, this route is only suitable for those who have no issue in hiking in this type of terrain for a minimum of 2-3 hours as far as the Monastery and then a further few hours walking on sandy terrain, whilst exploring the main site of Petra. You can take everything at your own pace, but do be prepared for a long day. Again comfortable walking shoes and a daypack are required.

There are no walks of similar durations on the Egypt section of the tour. However, access on and off the feluccas is by way of planks and steps, and you do need to be fairly mobile for this part of the trip.

We run regular small-group departures on this tour throughout the year. All departures are guaranteed to run with a minimum of 2 travellers and maximum of 14. Departure dates and prices are listed on our website (please check for up-to-date prices and special offers).

The tour can also be run privately on any other dates for a small supplement, with the itinerary then being customisable to fit your personal requirements and budget.

Our tours offer a combination of various modes of transport. We want you to truly experience the country you're exploring, but at the same time, ensure you’re comfortable and refreshed for the next part of the journey. Given the routes in Sudan, the available public transport options, and the distances between locations, we use private vehicles like Toyota Landcruisers (max 4 passengers per vehicle) or Toyota Hilux (max 3 passengers per vehicle) for the entire tour.

This tour includes a meet-and-greet service and airport transfer on the first day. Our representative will be waiting with an Egypt Uncovered signboard or your name clearly displayed for easy identification. If you are unable to locate our representative, emergency contact numbers will be provided on your tour confirmation voucher.

A transfer to the airport is also included at the end of the tour. Please review the tour itinerary and your flight times carefully. Most international flights departing from Khartoum are scheduled in the early hours of the morning. If you have upgraded to a 4 or 5-star hotel in Khartoum, only a day-use room is typically included for your final day. A full night's stay is provided at the standard 3-star hotel. If you require a full night’s accommodation in an upgraded hotel, an additional charge may apply.

Refunds are not available for missed transfers or parts of your trip due to incorrect flight details or delayed arrivals. Any additional expenses incurred to join the group will be your responsibility.

If your flights are scheduled to arrive before the tour starts or depart after the tour ends, we can arrange extra accommodation and airport transfers. We will strive to book these at the same hotel as the main tour, subject to availability (upgraded hotels can also be arranged upon request). Please note that if you do not book additional accommodation through us, arrival and departure transfer services will not be included, and you will need to organise your own transport.

Arrival Procedure

Be prepared for potential delays at immigration, especially if you are obtaining a “visa on arrival” (refer to the Passports and Visas section). After passport control, proceed to baggage reclaim, where further waiting times are common. Once you collect your luggage, you will need to show your baggage receipts (typically attached to your boarding pass), and your bags may be manually inspected by airport staff. This is standard procedure to ensure no prohibited items, such as alcohol or inappropriate materials, are brought into Sudan. Be aware that some magazines with certain images might also be considered inappropriate and could be confiscated without return.

After completing these formalities, you will find our representative waiting just outside the glass doors with an Egypt Uncovered signboard or your name clearly displayed.

We aim to offer you as much flexibility as possible when booking your holiday with us. To accommodate travellers with varying plans, we exclude international flights from the main tour price. However, we are happy to assist with flight suggestions that complement the tour. Simply provide us with your preferred dates and departure airport, and we will present a selection of airlines, schedules, and fares for you to choose from.

Your transfers between the airport and hotel are included on the first and last days of the tour. Our Sudan tours begin and end at Khartoum airport (KRT).

Occasionally, we also offer flight-inclusive packages from selected airports. When these are available on our website, the prices quoted are accurate at the time, but are subject to the availability of the fare used. Prices will be confirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide you with flight times and airline details before issuing tickets.

Flight-inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available, which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled due to circumstances like Covid-19, in which case airlines tend to offer more flexibility. If you require more flexible ticket options or wish to upgrade to Premium Economy or Business Class, these can be arranged for an additional supplement. Any changes to flight-inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline's terms and conditions.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Flying is a wonderful way to see the world, but it does contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which have an impact on the environment. By considering the CO2 emissions of your flight when booking, you can help reduce your travel footprint.

When booking international flights, we recommend you also take into account the CO2 emissions of your chosen airline. Some airlines and flight search engines (such as Google Flights or Skyscanner) provide this information, allowing you to compare your options and make a more informed choice. Many airlines are now working towards more sustainable practices, and by opting for greener flight options, you can contribute to positive environmental change while still enjoying your adventure.

Tipping in Sudan: An Overview

Tipping, or bahsis (pronounced bahk-sheesh), is a common and widely accepted practice in Sudan. The wages for service workers are generally low, and tips play an essential role in supplementing their modest incomes.

However, tipping remains voluntary, and the amount should reflect both the quality of service you receive and your personal financial situation. Many people seek guidance on how much to tip, so here are some general suggestions to help:

  • Restaurants and Taxis:

    • For local markets and casual dining spots, simply leaving the small change is appropriate.
    • In more upscale restaurants, a tip of around 5% to 10% of the total bill is recommended.
  • Local Guides:

    • If you have a local guide accompanying you during your travels, a tip of USD 2 per person per day is a suitable amount.
  • Drivers:

    • You may have private drivers throughout your trip, some for brief periods and others for longer durations. While USD 2 per person per day is generally acceptable, you may consider a higher tip for those who are more involved in the trip.
  • Tour Guides:

    • For your main tour guide, we suggest tipping between USD 25 to 40 per person for the entire duration of the tour. Ultimately, the amount should reflect your level of satisfaction with their service and your budget. There's no pressure to give a specific amount—it's entirely up to you.

You should ensure you have comprehensive insurance that covers medical emergencies, including emergency evacuation and repatriation.

Vaccination recommendations and other health precautions vary depending on the country you are visiting and where you are travelling from. It is advisable to consult your GP, healthcare provider, or a travel clinic for the latest vaccination information for your destination. Additionally, make sure that you are up-to-date with the vaccines and boosters recommended for your regular life back home, such as those for occupational risks, lifestyle-related exposures, and any underlying health conditions. Below are the additional vaccinations and health precautions typically recommended for the countries in this region:

  • South Africa: Hepatitis A, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Namibia: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from an infected area).
  • Botswana: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Zimbabwe: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Zambia: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Malawi: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Tanzania: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area).
  • Kenya: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Poliomyelitis, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from an infected area).
  • Uganda: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from an infected area).
  • Sudan: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Malaria precautions (Malaria map), Yellow Fever certificate (Required if coming from or transiting through an infected area; may also be needed for departure).
  • Morocco: Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, Malaria not usually present, Yellow Fever certificate not required.

Please note that this information may change at short notice. For the most up-to-date health and vaccination requirements, we suggest contacting your medical practitioner or travel clinic.

Malaria: There is no vaccine for Malaria, a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes. To reduce the risk of infection, wear long-sleeved clothing and long trousers, use insect repellents, and sleep under a mosquito net if needed. Mosquitoes are most active during and after sunset. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for the most suitable malaria prevention medication for the areas you are visiting.

Yellow Fever: This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes active during the day. Many countries require a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate as part of their entry requirements, particularly if you have travelled from or through an infected region, including stopovers of more than 12 hours. You can refer to US CDC information to check where Yellow Fever is present and which countries require proof of vaccination. Ensure that you arrange for the certificate in advance and carry it with you throughout your trip.

Please inform us of any pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or asthma, as well as any prescription medications you are taking. Additionally, we need to know about any food allergies or physical disabilities.

If you are taking part in an Overland tour or a wildlife safari, be aware that you may be travelling on rough or bumpy terrain for extended periods. This can be uncomfortable or even painful, especially if you have a back condition. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

The time in Sudan is 3 hours ahead of GMT. Daylight saving time is not observed.

Luggage:
To ensure smooth transport of everyone’s luggage in the vehicles, we kindly ask that you bring soft luggage instead of hard suitcases. A small daypack or bag is also recommended for daily outings. Your main luggage will typically stay at your accommodation during sightseeing trips, so you won’t need to carry it far. Hotel porters are usually available to assist with luggage handling.

Luggage Restrictions:
To optimise space and comfort in the vehicles, we ask that your main luggage does not exceed 15kg for this tour. As for hand luggage, most airlines allow between 5kg and 10kg, but we kindly request you limit yours to 5kg.

Clothing:
Sudan's climate varies from hot and dry in the north to humid and tropical in the equatorial south. The best time to visit is from October to April. During October/November and March/April, daytime temperatures range from 30-38°C, with nights around 12-18°C. In December/January/February, temperatures are slightly cooler at 25-30°C during the day, with nights dropping to 5-10°C. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C, but tours are generally not held during this time. Dust storms (haboobs) can occur from July to August and again from November to January. You will need clothing suitable for hot days but also something warm for the cooler evenings and nights, especially in the desert areas.
Sudan is a predominantly Muslim country with Sharia law in place, and modesty is highly valued, particularly for women. Therefore, it’s advised that clothes be loose-fitting and not revealing. Women are not required to wear a veil or cover their heads, but it’s a good idea to bring a headscarf or sunhat as they are often helpful in the desert sun. Shorts should be avoided by both men and women.

Other Essentials:
Bedding (sheets, blankets, pillow) will be provided at the Meroe desert camp, but we recommend bringing a lightweight sleeping sheet or liner for added comfort year-round (sand tends to find its way everywhere). Additionally, we suggest you bring a sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a basic first aid kit, toiletries, a money belt, a small torch, a camera, and chargers.

Nimitti:
Between February and April, there can be an abundance of “nimitti” in the northern regions (Tombos, Soleb area). These small, harmless flies, which aid in palm pollination, can be quite bothersome. We will provide fly nets for face protection, and your tour leader will suggest wearing long-sleeved tops to help minimise discomfort.

Passports should be valid for at least six months after your departure from the country. Please do not bring an almost full or almost expired passport. Visa arrangements are the responsibility of the traveller, and requirements are subject to change by the local authorities.

To promote tourism to the country, the Jordanian government has designed the Jordan Pass. This provides adults of most nationalities with a free single entry Jordan visa (for stays of 3 nights or more), a discounted package of entrance fees, and free digital brochures for the various sites in Jordan. Please check the Jordan Pass tour note for more information.

Please note that whilst the Jordan Pass is recommended for the vast majority of our Jordan Tours where entrance fees are not included, this is not recommended for our Petra & the Bedouin Trail tour as entrance fees to Petra and Wadi Rum are already included in the cost of this tour.

Double or multi entry visas for Jordan are no longer available and you will need to arrange two visas if you are doing a combination tour (eg. with Egypt and/or Israel) that visits Jordan more than once. Exceptions may occur if you are crossing to and from Israel via the King Hussein Bridge - please contact us for details.

If you wish to arrange your visa separately in advance, or if your stay will be shorter than four days/3 nights, then a visa fee of 40JD (approx. USD 57) will be due.

Families with children under 12 are recommended not to purchase the Jordan Pass for the children as entrance fees are not charged in Jordan for children under 12. Instead, the adults should purchase a Jordan Pass and we will arrange a free visa for the children which you will receive when we meet you on arrival into Amman airport.

Other nationalities may require a visa prior to arrival and to obtain this in advance, please contact your local Jordanian embassy or consulate or a visa agency for details. In addition, if you plan to enter Jordan via the southern Wadi Araba crossing (Eilat-Aqaba) or the Allenby Bridge/King Hussein border with Israel in the north, you will need to obtain your Jordan visa in advance as these are not available on arrival at the border.

Your airport transfers are included on the first and last day of the set tour itinerary, plus on any additional days if you book your hotel room with us. If you make your own arrangements for additional accommodation at either the beginning or the end of the tour then you will need to arrange your own airport transfers on these days. We will provide detailed instructions of where to meet us in the airport, along with international and local emergency contact numbers, when we send you your final tour confirmation voucher about 2 weeks before departure.

On some of our group tours we do offer an optional upgrade to a higher level of hotels. If some people in the group take this upgrade, this will mean that there may be two pick-ups and drop-offs each day. We do endeavour to ensure that all hotels used are close to each other and to streamline and time arrangements to limit any extra driving time as much as possible.

We are dedicated to offering small group tours, as we believe this provides the best opportunity for everyone to connect with fellow travellers and fully engage with their guide. There’s little value in having exceptional guides if you’re struggling to see or hear them over a crowd of 30-40 people! That’s why we’ll never place you on a 50-seater coach with 49 other passengers and a single guide. Instead, our Jordan group departures are limited to a maximum of 18 travellers.

In Jordan, all of our sightseeing tours are led by fully trained, local English-speaking guides. Additionally, our local representatives in each town and city along the route are available to assist, ensuring all practical arrangements are taken care of for the tour.

At Egypt Uncovered, we exclusively employ local Jordanian guides and representatives, as we believe this enhances your experience of both the country and the sights you are visiting. For more details and profiles of some of our most renowned local guides, please visit our website.

For groups of up to five, we provide an escort driver along with specialist local guides at Jerash and Petra. For groups of six or more, an escort guide will accompany the group throughout the tour.

The currency used in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JD). There is no need to bring Jordanian Dinars with you as you can easily exchange currency at international airports, hotels, banks, and currency exchange offices in major cities. It is advisable to carry small denominations of notes or coins for things like using public restrooms, tipping, and small purchases. ATMs are widely available in large towns, and many local shops accept VISA, Mastercard, or Amex, although they may charge a fee of up to 10%, so it’s wise to confirm this before making a payment. Traveller’s cheques are no longer widely accepted and can come with high exchange fees.

During your time in Jordan, you will need to cover costs such as meals not included in the itinerary, drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and personal expenses like laundry. These are typically paid for in Jordanian Dinar, but tips for guides and drivers can be given in foreign currency such as GBP, USD, or EUR.

It’s hard to give a precise figure for personal spending, as this depends on individual preferences, but as a rough guide, we recommend budgeting USD 15-25 per person per day. If you plan on shopping extensively or purchasing alcoholic drinks frequently, it’s advisable to set aside more.

The sockets are two-pronged and provide 220 volts. Universal adapters can usually be found in most airport shops if you don’t already have one. Standard European adapters will fit, though they may feel slightly loose in the sockets. All hotel rooms are equipped with electrical sockets, so you can charge cameras, phones, and other devices. Hairdryers are generally available upon request at hotel receptions, if they aren’t already provided in your room. If you're bringing US appliances, you'll need both a voltage converter and a plug adapter.

Jordan info

The price of the majority of our Jordan tours does not include entrance fees to the sites visited on the tour (this excludes our Petra and Bedouin Trail Tour where entrance fees are included in the tour price and the Jordan Pass is not recommended):

We strongly recommend that you purchase a Jordan Pass prior to your travel to Jordan. This is a special package that has been designed by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for tourists visiting Jordan. As well as including a discounted package of entrance fees covering all the sites in Jordan that you will visit on this tour (plus many others), the Jordan Pass also provides free downloadable digital brochures on each attraction, plus a free tourist visa for entering the country (40JD if obtained on arrival in Jordan). It also allows us to speed up our entry to each site as if everyone has the Jordan Pass we won't need to queue for tickets.

A handful of sites that we visit on our tours are not covered by the Jordan Pass (eg. Mt. Nebo, St. George's Church at Madaba, and the Shawmuri & Azraq Reserves), so to keep things simple for you while you are in Jordan, where these are visited in our itineraries, the entry fees are included in your tour price. If you visit any other sites not covered by the Jordan Pass during your free time or on additional tours you arrange while in Jordan, you will need to pay the entrance fee at the site.

The cost for the Jordan Wanderer Pass which is suitable for all our tours which visit Petra on one day is JD70 (approx. US$99). You should also check if your tour visits the Baptism Site at Bethany and if it does, add on the supplement for this site (an extra JD8, discounted from the JD12 payable at the site). Passes are available by completing a simple online form before you travel, taking care to make sure your passport details are entered correctly as this doubles as your visa application. Your Jordan Pass will then be emailed to you as a pdf document, which you should print out and bring with you. You will then need to show this print out at the immigration desk on arrival in Jordan to obtain your free entry visa, and also at each attraction where it will be scanned to confirm your entry. Obtain your Jordan Pass here

If you do not obtain the Jordan Pass before arriving in Jordan, you will need to pay the entry fees when you arrive at each site and also pay JD40 for your Jordan visa when you enter the country (or arrange your visa in advance).
