Lebanon is a beautiful country located in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east, Israel to the south, and Cyprus to the west across the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland has contributed to its rich history and shaped a cultural identity of religious diversity.
Lebanon is a parliamentary democracy that includes confessionalism, in which high-ranking offices are reserved for members of specific religious groups. The president, for example, has to be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim, the parliament a Shi'a Muslim, the deputy prime minister and the deputy speaker of parliament Eastern Orthodox. This system is intended to deter sectarian conflict and to represent fairly the demographic distribution of the 18 recognized religious groups in government.
Lebanon is a unique country in the Middle East in that it is home to people of many different religions. This religious diversity is respected and tolerated by the Lebanese government, as evidenced by the fact that there has not been a national census conducted since 1932 to avoid sensitive issues regarding the relative sizes of different religions and religious sects. There are 18 state-recognized religious sects in Lebanon: four Muslim, 12 Christian, one Druze, and one Jewish. The Druze are counted as part of the Muslim population by the Lebanese government, even though most Druze today do not identify as Muslim.
This tolerant attitude towards different religions is one of the many things that makes Lebanon a special and welcoming place for tourists from all over the world.
