Nearly all our tours to Egypt, Jordan and Syria are itinerary based - in other words, we show you around the country with stops at several different destinations along the way so that you can see, learn and enjoy as much about your destination as possible. We don't run package holidays with just a flight and single beach resort.
We offer tours which concentrate on different geographical areas, have a lot of or no adventurous activities included, and that feature a range of comfort and accommodation levels. You can join a small-group or enjoy a completely private or tailor-made holiday experience.
You can search of all the destinations and activities offered by Egypt Uncovered, by using our tour finder, which can be found on every page of our websites in the left hand menu.
Whichever way you search, you will find descriptive itineraries, maps, and tour highlights. We also feature extensive information on the countries we visit and the activities we offer through country and activity guides and features.
Nearly all the tours detailed on this website have regular departures that you may join as an individual, couple, family or group of friends. Joining a group tour is a great way to enjoy the destination at a lower cost, and to also meet some like-minded people along the way. We keep the maximum number in each group small (max 12-18) to improve your experience and relationship with your guide and with other members in the group. The minimum number of travellers required for a tour to run is also kept as low as possible (min 2-4) which means that we hardly ever cancel a tour departure. Most tours depart approximately every 2 or 4 weeks - exact dates for each tour are given on each tour web page, and are also available on request.
During busy periods we often run several groups on the same tour starting on the same date. When this happens, we take great care to split our travellers up in such a way as to give you the best holiday experience (eg. keeping similar ages together, families with similar aged children together).
All the suggested tour itineraries on this website can also be run privately on nearly any date (there are some restrictions with regard to the sailing dates of cruise boats and dahabiyas). This type of travel is most suited if our group dates do not fit with your available holiday, if you do not want to travel with other people in a larger group, or if you want the extra flexibility and personal touch that a private tour affords. You can book the itineraries exactly as they are described, or they can be extended or shortened to suit your travel requirements. Prices for booking each tour privately are given on each tour web-page - because we keep our group tour minimum numbers low, the extra cost for doing the same tour privately is not that high.
You can also use the itineraries on this website as a starting point to give you some interesting ideas and to show you what is possible. If you contact us with ideas and requirements, we can then customise an itinerary to fit your personal preferences and interests, available dates and budget. Our travel consultants know Egypt, Jordan and Syria very well and have years of experience in designing itineraries for our travellers, and are always very happy to work with you and provide their own suggestions to ensure you end up with a really special holiday.
We also often work with larger groups including schools, dive clubs and societies, so if you are an organisation or business looking for a tailor-made tour, please contact us and our staff will be happy to help.
Our policy at Uncover the World is to use only local guides and tour leaders, as we feel that this not only contributes to the local economy but also provides you with the best local knowledge available. Local guides can almost invariably give more information and bring a country, its history, culture and nature alive much more than non-native guides. All our guides are fully trained, have a high level of English, and are experienced in dealing with western travellers. In Egypt, they are all university trained Egyptologists, while in Jordan and Syria all have professional guiding qualifications. We select our guides carefully and value them very highly as we know how important a good guide is to your holiday experience. We are very pleased that many of our guides been working with us for many years. Our clients often describe their tour guide as being one of the highlights of their holiday.
In keeping with our aim for our tours to immerse themselves in the local culture and environment, when practical, we suggest the use of public trains instead of internal flights. Due to the poor hygiene standards and regular delays on the Egyptian 'sitting trains' we have chosen to only use the overnight sleeper train for journeys between Cairo and Aswan/Luxor. These train journeys provide a good opportunity to see a little more of the life of the country moving and working around you.We do offer optional upgrades to internal flights instead of these overnight trains, and some tours may include an internal flight as part of the set itinerary where we feel it greatly improves your experience and the running of the tour.
For other journeys and your sightseeing tours, we use private coaches, mini-buses, mini-vans, people carriers or cars depending on the number of people in your party. We always ensure there is a good ratio of extra free seats to travellers to give you space and so you don't feel squashed. All vehicles are regularly inspected, air-conditioned (except for some open 4x4 desert jeeps), and many are fitted with speed limiters and speed reporting & navigation devices. In some areas such as Wadi Rum in Jordan, we are obliged to use locally owned vehicles and are not able to provide our own, and in these places vehicle quality and safety standards may be lower.
Please see the tour itinerary pages and factsheets for specific transport arrangements for each tour.
This website features accommodation pages for Egypt, Jordan and Syria, which list a range of different hotels and accommodation options available. We give our tours different 'comfort ratings' (see below) and each tour page gives links to the range of hotels used in each location visited. The accommodation pages then give information on which hotels are used for different comfort ratings.
If you book a place on a tour joining a small-group departure, or as a private departure, then we will let you know the hotels to be used for your holiday a couple of weeks before your departure. If you have specific requests for particular hotels, then please request a tailor-made tour and we will confirm the hotels at the time of your booking.
In order to help you more quickly and easily decide if one of our suggested tour itineraries is right for you, we have rated each tour using the following three categories:
Our travel ideas are a convenient way to categorise the type of tours we offer. Below you will find a full list of all our travel ideas along with a brief explanation of each travel idea.
This travel idea describes tours that may concentrate on cultural and historic sightseeing, but that also feature some more adventurous sections (for example an overnight felucca sailboat trip). These may be more physically active than other tours, and may include some basic accommodation.
This travel idea describes general sightseeing tours, which focus on the cultural and historic background of a country. The are no particularly adventurous or strenuous elements and the accommodation level is more likely to be consistent throughout.
These tours are designed specifically with families travelling with children in mind. They are usually run at a slightly slower pace with less intense sightseeing, some activities or visits chosen especially for children, and more time to relax. The guides we use are have experience working with children and know how to make the itinerary interesting but not too testing, especially in hot climates.
Usually short breaks and weekend getaways, these itineraries are perfect for anyone interested in the many wonderful cities in the region. They are great for giving you a taste of a country when you are limited for time.
This travel idea is used for tours that include a multi-day cruise as a major part of the itinerary. This includes tours featuring Nile cruise boats and Dahabiyas, but not felucca sailboats.
Our special interest tours are designed for people interested in something out of the ordinary. The itinerary concentrates on a particular theme or topic, but may also include some general sightseeing as well. Examples of special interests may include ancient religious or Biblical sites, wildlife or bird watching, belly dancing classes or photography, to name but a few.
The Red Sea around Egypt, and also accessible from Aqaba in Jordan is a fabulous place for keen scuba-divers, and these tours are aimed at people who want to learn to dive or improve their qualifications with a PADI course, or those who are already qualified and want to enjoy some amazing diving among the many coral reefs, islands and wrecks in the Red Sea.
This desert safari category describes tours that explore the area's desert regions and oases as a major part of the itinerary. They may also include time sightseeing or doing other activities, but the highlight of the tour will be time in the desert. Many will include overnight Bedouin camps where you sleep under the stars, 4x4 desert jeep safaris and camel rides.
These tours are specially designed for keen fishermen and women and spend a major portion of the itinerary fishing either on Lake Nasser for Nile Perch or sport fishing in the Red Sea. Some itineraries are dedicated purely to fishing, while some also include some Nile Valley sightseeing and time relaxing by the Red Sea.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL
To help you know what to expect, we have rated all our holiday itineraries based on how much physical activity is included in them.
The level of activity on these tour itineraries is minimal and would normally only include gentle walking, usually around sites of interest. These itineraries are suitable for nearly everyone both young and old and are also well suited to families with children.
Although still suitable for most people, including young and old, these tour itineraries do involve some level of activity. The level of activity on these itineraries is generally quite mild but may include some longer walks, sometime on uneven ground. There may also be some climbing on and off boats or up and down steps/slopes which would require a greater level of physical mobility.
The level of activity on these tour itineraries is more demanding and might include short treks, longer days and more physical activities such as scuba-diving.
The level of activity on these tours is of a strenuous nature and will require a good level of physical fitness. Activities at this level might include longer desert treks and more advanced scuba-diving courses.
Each of the travel ideas listed above may include tours set at different levels of accommodation. We describe this by using the comfort ratings below. You can use these to select or dismiss particular itineraries based on your personal preferences and the style of holiday you are looking for. The nature of itinerary based tours like ours means that it is not always possible to maintain the same comfort level for every night of the trip - indeed part of the idea is to mix this up a little. These ratings therefore give a general overview of the accommodation level to be used and individual itineraries may include one or more nights at a higher or lower level.
Our basic rating is only used where the level of services available for a major portion of the tour is very limited. This might include the use of 2 to 3-star hotels, homestays and desert camps. This level of tour is suitable for anyone wishing to spend some time off the beaten path and therefore accept a lower level of comfort. Many of our desert safari tours are set at this level as you'll be doing an overnight desert camp and the hotel facilities in the oases are relatively basic. You may still get several nights in around 4-star level hotels however.
Our standard rating is based on good quality, comfortable hotels around the 4-star level. Most will have swimming pools and more than one restaurant and bar. Our cultural adventure tours that feature overnight felucca cruises are set at this level despite the basic accommodation for the 2 nights on the felucca. This level of tour is suitable for anyone interested in a good balance of comfort and value for money.
Tours with our luxury rating use mainly high quality 5-star hotels and luxury Nile cruise-boats and Dahabiyas to provide you with all the luxury and comfort available. We may still use more basic overnight sleeper trains and tours may feature one night at a desert camp, but the vast majority of the tour will be in 5-star hotels.
Following a significant improvement in the situation on the ground in Egypt and relaxation of official UK Foreign Office advice, we are delighted to be able to run tours throughout most of Egypt at the moment. The majority of our group tour program is running, as well as private & tailor-made options. A few geographical restrictions apply and some minor itinerary adjustments may be required.
