Syria has far fewer visitors than Egypt and Jordan, but in some ways is an even more fascinating place to visit. The country has been occupied and ruled by numerous different civilisations since ancient times, and the remains of many of these can still be seen today. The capital, Damascus, has been inhabited for longer than nearly anywhere else on earth, and you can really feel the thread of history running through to today when you explore its bazaars and mosques and stay in one of the beautifully converted merchant houses and palaces that it is increasingly famous for. Other highlights include the extensive Roman ruins in the desert city of Palmyra, Crac des Chevaliers crusader castle, Alleppo's maze-like souq and citadel, the cliff-top town of Maloula where the ancient Aramaic language is still spoken, and the Mediterranean town of Latakia with its beautiful surrounding green mountains and sandy beaches.
A visit to Syria can also be easily combined with time in neighbouring Jordan, whose capital Amman is only four hours drive from Damascus.
Note: Due to the current security situation in Syria, at this time we are not running any of our tours to the country. We will only restart operating in Syria when we are confident it is safe for our travellers to visit.
Ant has a passion for the Middle East and visits the region regularly. As well as knowing all our Egypt tours back to front, he handles most of our tailor-made tours in Jordan and Syria.
