Upon arrival in Amman you are met by our rep and transferred from the airport to our chosen hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to recover from your flight and explore the local area.
We start the day with a tour of Amman, visiting the Roman amphitheatre and Odeon, along with other interesting sites. In the afternoon we tour the extensive ruins at Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman sites in the whole of the Middle East.
We leave Amman this morning and take the fast Desert Highway to Aqaba. The whole afternoon is then free to enjoy your Red Sea resort, or to take an optional boat trip for some spectacular snorkelling or scuba-diving over the Red Sea's famous coral reefs.
After breakfast we visit Aqaba Fort, we then head into the spectacular desert scenery of Wadi Rum for a jeep safari, Bedouin lunch, and overnight desert camp under the stars. Options for a camel ride in the desert are also available if you wish.
We leave Wadi Rum after breakfast, and drive to the imposing hilltop castle at Shobak. This was the first of a string of castles built by the Crusaders across Jordan. In the afternoon we visit 'Little Petra', a smaller site close to Petra which provides a great introduction to the history and architecture that we'll see more of tomorrow. In the evening you may like to take the chance to do the beautiful and atmospheric Petra by Candlelight tour.
You have a full day in Petra today, starting with a 3-4 hour guided tour of the main sites where you'll learn more about the Nabatean traders who built it, the way the temples and buildings were carved into the colourful rock faces, and the history of future occupiers such as the Romans whose ruins include a well preserved amphitheatre. After lunch you have plenty of time to explore the site further, perhaps climbing up to the High Place of Sacrifice, or the huge Monastery from where there are fabulous views over the Jordan Valley.
Today's drive is up the scenic King's Highway, passing through rural villages and some beautiful countryside, with stops en-route to view the majestic valley of Wadi Mujib, see the intricate Roman mosaics at Madaba, and enjoy views over Israel from Mt. Nebo. We finish the day at a resort by the Dead Sea where you can bathe in the strange salty waters before we return to Amman for our last night in Jordan.
Your time is free today until we transfer you to Amman airport for your departure flight. Various day trip options are available to visit Ajloun Castle and Umm Qais, the nearby Baptism Site at Bethany, or we can extend your tour to head into Israel and visit Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
We use a range of carefully selected hotels on our group departures. If you have specific requests for hotels, please ask for a private or tailor-made tour.
"Overall it was a fantastic holiday for us. The children (girls of 11, 13, 15) enjoyed it very much. Some real highlights and memories."
